Preventive Care Q & A

How do preventive health visits protect my health?

Chronic diseases slowly and progressively develop for years before they cause symptoms. By the time you notice a symptom and decide to visit the Signature Health and Wellness team, it’s too late to prevent the problem.

When you get yearly preventive exams, your practitioner carefully screens your health and evaluates your risk factors for chronic disease. Most importantly, with a physical exam and in-house lab tests, they can detect changes in time to start the treatment you need to prevent disease or to stop it from worsening.

Type 2 diabetes is a good example of a chronic disease that you can prevent. In the years before you develop type 2 diabetes, your blood sugar is elevated — slightly above normal but not high enough to cause symptoms or full-blown diabetes.

When this prediabetic stage is found during a preventive health visit, your practitioner can help you lower your blood sugar, which prevents diabetes from developing. On the other hand, once you have diabetes, it can’t be cured.

What should I expect during a preventive health visit?

During a yearly preventive health exam, your Signature Health and Wellness provider reviews your medical history, talks about medications you may take, and performs a thorough physical exam.

Preventive health care focuses on screening for potential problems, so they also order blood tests to check for cholesterol, glucose, hormone levels, and other markers that show whether you have body-wide inflammation.

Your preventive visit may include:

  • Screening for cancer (breast, cervical, prostate)
  • Help scheduling screenings for osteoporosis, and colorectal, breast, or lung cancers
  • Weight loss management
  • Immunizations needed for your age and health
  • Support for stopping smoking
  • Alcohol and substance misuse counseling
  • Emotional health evaluation
  • Eye and hearing exams

During your preventive health visit, you’ll also have plenty of time to talk with your practitioner about any health concerns you may have.

Are lab tests available in the office?

Signature Health and Wellness provides a range of in-office labs so that you can receive the health care you need in one location. You may receive:

  • On-site blood draws
  • Allergy testing
  • Stress testing
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG) to evaluate your heart
  • Spirometry to assess lung function

If it’s time for your yearly preventive health visit, call Signature Health and Wellness or book an appointment online.
